Transportation Handbook
Our Transportation Handbook is designed to help students and families understand the expectations that keep every ride safe, respectful, and welcoming. Inside, you'll find important information about bus procedures, student responsibilities, safety guidelines, and transportation policies to help every school day begin and end on a positive note.
Transportation Eligibility
Understanding school transportation policies can be tricky, so we want to make our guidelines as transparent as possible. Below, you’ll find key details and pictures regarding our district transportation boundaries, walking-distance radii, and policy exceptions.
Walking Zones & School Boundaries
One of our most frequently asked questions is whether a student qualifies for bus transportation or resides within a designated walking zone.
To help clarify this, we have provided screenshots taken directly from our routing software displaying each school's walking-distance radius. These distances align with the guidelines outlined in the SPS District Handbook.
District Boundaries & Group Stops
The District Boundary tab is a snapshot of our official transportation boundary.
-
Outside Boundary: Students residing outside this boundary are not eligible for regular bus pickup and drop-off services.
-
In-District Group Stops: To assist families living outside the service area, we offer several designated in-district group stop locations that families may choose to utilize.
Capacity Limitations & Policy Exceptions
We understand that transportation eligibility can be frustrating, especially when exceptions cannot be made. Unfortunately, our services are strictly limited by available bus capacity and driver staffing levels. While we cannot accommodate individual requests outside established guidelines, state and federal regulations mandate transportation accommodations for specific circumstances, including:
-
Students with special needs
-
Students whose transportation requirements are specified in an IEP
-
Students eligible under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
-
Other unique, legally qualified circumstances requiring individual consideration
